Nut Milk

One of our families fridge staples!  It is so simple to make your own plant based milk using nuts, oats, hemp seeds and if you want to get creative you could add a few in together!

I have taught Mike my partner to make milk as well, If we ever need a fresh batch it’s super easy for us to whip up. I first started making my own a few years ago when I couldn’t justify spending lots of money each week on tetra pack cartons – and then  finding out that you couldn’t recycle them.

Our go to is definitely cashew milk and half the time we do add a tablespoon of hemp seeds as well – I love using hemp seeds in so many things because they’re such a great plant-based source of omegas.

We limit our dairy intake in our household and making your own plant based milk not only will save you money but also helps to cut down the inflammation in our body from having lots of conventional dairy milk.

You do need a high-speed blender but with cashews because they are soft, it’s the easiest to make as you don’t need to pre-soak the nuts overnight or strain the milk away from the pulp (Almond milk you do need to do this)

TIP!
If you were in a real hurry and want to do the quick version, you can add a tablespoon of almond or cashew butter with some water – a great way to do it when the nut butter is already blended.

If you can do this with activated nuts I find it works a lot better but if you don’t use them it’s still great!

No need to be 100% specific with the ingredients for this one – you could always add a few more nuts or a few less depending on the consistency that you like.

Ingredients
1/2 cup cashews**
1/4 cup hemp seeds (optional)
700ml water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Sweetener of choice (I use 1 tsp of xylitol)
Pinch salt
Optional: 2-3 tbsp hemp seeds

Method
Blend for two minutes in a high-speed blender

Note: You can switch out the cashews for oats or the other type of nuts you would like to try!
